matthias brandes
"The house is not a place to live but a symbol of being. I am interested in the human condition, in experiencing moments of harmony in a situation dominated by precariousness.." Matthias Brandes
Brandes is a German painter born in Bochum (Germany). He studied Art History and Pedagogy at the University of Hamburg. For forty years he has lived and worked in Venice, in fact Italian art has influenced his production.
Brandes’s painting is a materic with rough brushstrokes, this technique makes the light and consequently the painting vibrates. He often prefers earthy colors. His subjects, sometimes suspended in imaginary worlds, range from human figures to still life and houses. His painting is metaphysical and surreal, the subjects are represented in an apparently essential way but hide deep symbols: the human condition with all its contradictions.
His works can be found in public and private collections around the world.
